“I like cancelled plans. And empty bookstores. I like rainy days and thunderstorms. And quiet coffee shops. I like messy beds and over-worn pajamas. Most of all, I like the small joys that a simple life brings.”—note to self (via eauphory)
“Black women artists are here, we exist and we exist positively despite the racial, sexual and class oppressions which we suffer. However, we must first point out the way in which these oppressions have operated in a wider context - not just the art world, but also in the struggles for Black and female liberation.”—Chila Kumari Burman, ‘There Have Always Been Great Black Women Artists,’ in Charting the Journey: Writings by Black and Third World Writers, 1988 (via blackcontemporaryart)
“We don’t need to have just one favorite. We keep adding favorites. Our favorite book is always the book that speaks most directly to us at a particular stage in our lives. And our lives change. We have other favorites that give us what we most need at that particular time. But we never lose the old favorites. They’re always with us. We just sort of accumulate them.”—Lloyd Alexander (via beautiful-ambition)
this symbol does not represent mainstream feminism
this is the symbol for black feminism, that black feminists have created and been using for decades to represent our struggle against anti-black misogyny, hence the combination of the black power fist and the symbol for womanhood.
“I’ve told the kids in the ghettos that violence won’t solve their problems, but then they ask me, and rightly so; “Why does the government use massive doses of violence to bring about the change it wants in the world?” After this I knew that I could no longer speak against the violence in the ghettos without also speaking against the violence of my government”—
You can never label yourself as “one of the good ones” you gotta be constantly calling yourself out and checking yourself and if you can call out others. We all have internalized shit we gotta combat every second. Just gotta deal with that. Re: racism, misogyny, transmisogny, transphobia, etc. We all have something to work on!
“Date someone who meets you half way. Date someone who brings you a glass a water when they get themselves one. Date someone who makes sure you don’t spend money on ridiculous things. Date someone your ex hates and your mom loves. Date someone who’d rather spend a Friday night watching movies, than out with 50 people they barely even talk to. Date someone who sleeps on your chest and leaves a little puddle of drool. Don’t date someone who makes you leave oceans of tears.”—At the end of the day it’s the little things. (via offtheocean)
“It was drummed into my head that college is the ticket to a good life… but some career goals don’t require college. For Kanye to make an album called College Dropout it was more about having the guts to embrace who you are, rather than following the path society has carved out for you.”—(via psych-facts)
In my sociology discussion class, a few white students said that their grandparents are racist, but they can't blame them because of the time that they grew up in. Essentially, they were arguing that "you can't teach a dog new tricks," so there is no point in arguing with old, racist White people. I'm aware that one's opinions are shaped by their bringing and I know it's difficult to change, but I don't think that's a viable excuse to be racist, especially in today's world. What do you think?
Based on the racism my grand parents faced, they should all hate white people. They should think white people are evil due to the injustice they faced.
But they don’t
Because my grandparents are old, but not hateful or ignorant
Old people have been around longer and should know better
They have met more people that challenge their stereotypes and seen the world change to be more progressive
Nope, I don’t excuse older people for their racism
Because it dismisses the other old people who grew up in the same time but made the choice to not be a bigot
That “they don’t know better” excuse only applies to children under the age of 10
